Letterboxing

Letterboxing is a fun activity that combines puzzles and mystery with venturing in the great outdoors. Letterboxing has it's origins in Darmoor, Devon, England in 1854 when a gentleman left his calling card in a jar by a remote pool. The note accompanying the card directed people to leave their cards in the jar as well. More jars were placed in Darmoor, and letterboxing began. The cards were eventually replaced by stamps, and word of mouth clues moved to the internet.

Learn more about letterboxing today and see if the Leffingwell House Museum's letterbox ditty's clues help you locate our letterbox.

Origami

Origami is an ancient oriental art and examples may have been brought to this country thru trade. Origami can recycle paper in a fun way. Norwich had the first paper mill in CT. Norwich harbour was home to rowboats, sailboats, steamboats, freighters and catamarans. Why not combine the two! You'll find the directions for making several different kinds of origami boats (and more) below.

It's About Scarecrows!!

Hungry birds have always been a problem for farmers. Sometimes the birds ate so much corn or wheat that a farmer and his family would not have enough food to last through the winter. So, for more than 3,000 years, farmers have been making scarecrows. Read "Scarecrow History" and learn more about how scarecrows were used and how farmers protected their corn from crows.

Color in Our Scarecrow and bring it to the Fall Festival!!

Or draw a scarecrow using this pattern.

Build and place a scarecrow for display on the front lawn of the museum in October and enter our scarecrow competition during the Fall Festival.
