Earth Day 2007America in Bloom
Friends and neighbors lend your hands! Join the Leffingwell House Museum and Norwich's participation in the America in Bloom contest this Earth Day, Sunday April 22, 2007. We'll pick up roadside trash to help beautify the City of Norwich from Noon to 4 PM in the area of the museum 348 Washington Street. This is a rain or shine event. Please bring your own gloves. A rake may also be useful. There's a lot of work to be done everywhere before Norwich can bloom this summer! The National America in Bloom contest judging is being held July 24 and 25, 2007. Two judges will tour the city to assess its beauty, cleanliness and civic pride. The judges will view 80 percent of the city's homes, businesses and public properties. Norwich Spring Cleaning Starts This Weekend City gets ready for America In Bloom contest in July (excerpt) Norwich in Bloom will launch a two-day citywide cleanup effort Saturday, April 21 with an organizational meeting at 7:30 AM at Hart's Greenhouse. Volunteers should check in, choose a cleanup assignment and take as many special yellow trash bags as they can fill. Bags also are available during the week at City Hall and at Public Works, 50 Clinton Avenue. The Public Works Department will collect the bags during the regular garbage collection next week. Groups that have a large number of bags should call Public Works for a special pickup at 860-823-3799. Hart said areas of concern that the committee hopes to clean include the steep slope up Washington Street to the Jail Hill neighborhood, the vacant former jail property on Jail Hill, and the slope between Central Avenue and North Main Street in Greeneville. There's tons of places, she said."Just drive around and jump out and pick a spot. The city can't do it all. It's a good time now, because there's no leaves on the trees." At least two groups have organized their own cleanup events Sunday. The Leffingwell House Museum is asking for volunteers from noon to 4 p.m. to clean the area around the museum at 348 Washington St. near the entrance to the Route 2/32 expressway. Volunteers are asked to bring rakes and gloves. Volunteers will also clean, rake and restock toys at the Estelle Cohn Norwich Dog Park on Asylum Street starting at 10 AM. Volunteers are asked to bring their own tools and leave their dogs at home. For information, contact Mindy Angevine at 860-367-2660. |
