Great Backyard Bird Count Results

Great Backyard Bird Count results from February 12-15 are reported at the birdcount.org website.

Norwich submitted the most bird counts of any reporting city in Connecticut! From near the bottom of the list in previous years to the leader with your help. Please plan on participating again next year! Norwich residents have reported 58 checklists and 56 species.

Bird populations are dynamic; they are constantly in flux. No single scientist or team of scientists could hope to document the complex distribution and movements of so many species in just four days.

But with your help the birds from our community are well represented in the count. It doesn't matter whether you reported the 5 species coming to your backyard feeder or the 75 species you saw during a day's outing to a wildlife refuge. They all counted. The birds you saw and the ones that weren't around this year.

Thanks to all who participated and our friends at Liberty Bank, Norwich Agway, NCDC, Norwich Public Schools, James Laundromats, and everyone who allowed us to place the printed lists in their waiting areas.

Next year please encourage your friends and neighbors, Department of Public Utilities, library and others to participate in this vital and free program that helps to preserve the information of today for tomorrow.

On October 9, 2010, the Leffingwell House Museum will be sponsoring a "Celebration of Urban Birds" in honor of the 109th Anniversary of the Society of the Founders of Norwich. Please put this date on your calendar and join us from noon to four for demonstrations, activities, information and samples of bird seed.
