What's New? VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Celebrate the International Day of the Worker

On Saturday, May 1st from Noon to 3:30 PM the Leffingwell House Museum, 348 Washington Street will be celebrating May Day, the International Day of the Worker, by recording and filming visitors comments and stories about their jobs in 1 to five minute segments. The stories may be funny or serious, a job from the past or the present, paid or volunteer, its all up to the speaker. Re-enactors are welcome!

The finished product will be submitted to National Public Radio and to the Library of Congress as part of their living history programs.

The holiday is most often associated with the commemoration of the social and economic achievements of the labor movement. The 1 May date is used because in 1884 the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions, demanded an eight-hour workday in the United States, to come in effect as of May 1, 1886.

May Day is designated International Workers' Day. It is an international holiday; and the United States is one of the few countries in the world where pressure from the local working class has not led to an official holiday.

In less than 10 minutes individuals can be active participants in saving the present for the future. There is no fee to participate in this program. Tours of the musuem will be available for a $5.00 or more donation per person.
